A man and a woman have been arrested after a five-year-old girl suffered "life-changing injuries" after reportedly being attacked by a dog in Trafford.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that on Sunday (April 14) afternoon, they responded to reports of the girl being attacked by the dog at an address on Walnut Road, Partington.

The girl was left with injuries which have been described as "serious" and "life-changing", but not life-threatening.

A man, 28, and a woman, 34, have since been arrested.

GMP also confirmed it has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the fact police had had previous contact regarding the dog.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 3.40pm on Sunday 14 April 2024, officers responded to reports of a dog attacking a five-year-old girl inside a property on Walnut Road, Partington.

"The girl suffered serious life-changing injuries which were not life-threatening, while the dog was seized.

"A man aged 28 and a woman aged 34 have been arrested on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in any place.  The man has additionally been arrested on suspicion of child neglect. The woman has since been bailed.

"Due to previous police contact regarding the dog, a referral has been made to the IOPC."
